AI Etsy Product Photos
Etsy now asks for at least one unedited photo of the real item in every listing. Keep that one honest, then use Mage for the rest of the gallery: styled scenes, scale shots, gift settings and Pinterest pins built from your own photo.
No installation. No credit card. Private by default.

- 635 pxMinimum for the first photo
The basics
What Etsy's photo rules say now
Etsy changed its listing photo rules on October 22, 2026. Every listing must now include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with some exceptions depending on what you sell. Editing tools, AI included, are still allowed on the other photos, as long as they do not hide flaws or conceal damage and do not create false expectations about what the buyer will receive. Etsy recommends making the first photo the clearest, most realistic view of the item, and noting in your description if any photos were edited with AI.
The rest of Etsy's image requirements still apply. Etsy recommends photos at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and a first photo of at least 635 pixels so the listing is not shown lower in search. The first photo should be landscape or square, and it sets the shape of the photos after it. You can add up to 20 photos and two videos of 5 to 15 seconds. Files can be .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg or .heic, but animated GIFs are not supported and any transparent area shows up black.
We last checked these rules in October 2026 against Etsy's Help Center and coverage of the October announcement, linked at the bottom of this page. Etsy says it will keep testing enforcement and expanding removals, so read the current policy before you relist a whole shop. The rest of this page shows where AI still earns its place on Etsy and where it now gets a listing into trouble.
A little more possibility
Why Etsy sellers build their photos on Mage
Built from your real photo
Every scene starts from the unedited photo Etsy already requires, so the item in the styled shots is your item.
Styled scenes without a props shop
A breakfast table, a reading nook, a gift on a doorstep: describe it and Guava 2 Pro builds it around your piece.
Crops that survive thumbnails
Generate in 1:1, 5:4 or 3:2 with room around the item, so it stays clear in every crop Etsy uses.
Pins for Pinterest
A 2:3 frame and a Pinterest pin mode in the Product Photoshoot skill, for listings you promote on Pinterest.
Past 2,000 pixels
The Image Enhancer takes a finished scene to 4K, comfortably above what Etsy recommends.
Private by default
New designs stay in your account until you list them, so no one copies a piece before it launches.
From idea to creation
How do you make Etsy product photos with AI?
It takes three steps, and it is free to start.
Take the unedited photo
Photograph the item on a real surface in good daylight and upload this one to Etsy untouched. It is the photo the rules require.
Open Guava and attach it
Use the same photo as the reference in Guava 2 Pro, and write what must stay exactly as it is before you describe the scene.
Generate the supporting shots
Make a styled scene, a scale shot, a gift setting and a pin, and keep only the ones where the item matches the real piece.
Upscale and disclose
Take the keepers to 4K with the Image Enhancer, and note in your description which photos were edited with AI.
Tips and techniques
What the October 2026 rules mean for AI photos
The new rule is easy to meet and easy to break by accident. Take one photo of the item itself, on a real surface such as a table, a shelf, a wall or your hand, and upload it as it came out of the camera: no background swap, no AI cleanup, no retouching. Etsy's word is "unedited", so the safest reading is no edits at all on that photo. Make it the one you would show a buyer who asked what the piece really looks like.
Everything else in the gallery can be edited or generated, with one test: does it show what the buyer will receive? A styled scene of your real mug on a breakfast table passes. A generated mug with a smoother glaze, a brighter color or a size that looks bigger than it is does not, and if an item arrives materially different from its photos, Etsy can require you to refund the order.
Etsy also says it will flag photos that look AI-generated when you upload them, and buyers can now report misleading AI images. If AI made the item itself, such as a generated art print, Etsy requires you to disclose it. If you only used AI to edit photos, Etsy recommends saying so in the description, and doing it costs you nothing.
- One unedited photo of the real item, on a real background.
- AI scenes only in the other photos.
- Never use AI to hide a chip, a stain or a repair.
- Keep colors and finishes true to the piece.
- Note AI-edited photos in your description.
Tips and techniques
The exceptions: print on demand, digital and made to order
Etsy's photo policy has exceptions by item type. If you print your designs on standard products such as T-shirts or mugs through a production partner, you can use authorized mockups. Most digital downloads have to show previews or excerpts of what the buyer gets. Made-to-order and personalized items should show real examples of work you have already made. Patterns, recipes and other instructions must show a real, unedited photo of a finished result made from them, not an AI render.
For a made-to-order shop, that draws a clear line. AI can stage a piece you have already made in a new room, on a new table or in a gift box. It should not invent a piece you have not made yet, because that photo makes a promise your workshop has not kept.
Tips and techniques
The photos Etsy buyers look for
Etsy shoppers are buying handmade and vintage pieces from small shops, so they look for proof: the texture of the glaze, the maker's mark, how big the piece really is, and how it arrives. Plan the gallery so each photo answers one of those questions. Lead with the clearest view of the item, then a close-up of the material, a scale shot in a hand or next to a familiar object, a styled scene that shows how it lives in a home, a photo of the packaging, and a photo of each color or size you offer.
Mage helps most with the styled scenes and the variety. Attach your unedited photo to Guava 2 Pro, Mage's photorealism model, and describe the setting: "Keep the ring exactly as in the reference, including the hammered texture and the small stone. On a linen ring dish beside a window, soft morning light, 100mm macro." For a gift scene, Mango 3 can combine your item with a photo of your real packaging. When the light in a scene looks wrong for the piece, Relight changes its direction and color without a reshoot.
Etsy shows your first photo in three different crops across the site, so leave space around the item and keep it in the middle. Compose a little wider than you think you need, in 1:1, 5:4 or 3:2, and check that the item still reads in a tight square. The first photo also sets the shape of the rest, so keep the whole gallery in one ratio.
- Close-up of the material or finish.
- Scale: in a hand, on a body or beside a known object.
- A styled scene that shows the piece in use.
- Your real packaging, especially for gifts.
- One photo per color or size you sell.
Tips and techniques
Pinterest pins and the Product Photoshoot skill
If you promote listings on Pinterest, make the pin its own image in a tall 2:3 frame instead of cropping a listing photo. In Claude, Codex or Cursor, the Product Photoshoot skill on the Mage skills page shoots one product photo in up to ten modes, including a Pinterest pin, a lifestyle scene and a close-up with a person, and locks the shape, colors and label to your photo in every one. Mage's Marketplace Listing Images skill also lists Etsy among its marketplaces. Neither replaces the unedited photo: that one still comes from your camera.

Try these prompts
Etsy photo prompts to start from
Attach your unedited photo as the reference, keep the first sentence, and change the scene.
Handmade mug, breakfast scene
Keep the mug exactly as in the reference, including the glaze drips, the speckles and the stamp on the base. On a wooden breakfast table with a folded linen napkin and a slice of toast, soft window light from the left, 50mm.
Ring on a hand for scale
Keep the ring exactly as in the reference, same band width and stone size. Worn on the index finger of a relaxed hand resting on a cream knit sweater, natural daylight, 100mm macro, shallow depth of field.
Art print on a wall
Keep the print exactly as in the reference, same colors and proportions. In a thin oak frame on a white wall above a low bench with a plant, even daylight, straight-on, generous space around the frame.
Gift-ready packaging
Keep the candle and the kraft box exactly as in the references. The box open on a doorstep mat, tissue paper folded back, the candle inside, a sprig of eucalyptus, overcast daylight, 35mm.
Pinterest pin
Keep the tote bag exactly as in the reference, same print and stitching. Hanging from a chair in a sunlit studio corner, plants and a stack of books, warm afternoon light, tall 2:3 frame with calm space at the top.
Room to experiment
What passes on Etsy now, and what doesn't
Etsy has not banned AI from listing photos. It has drawn a line at photos that stop telling the truth about the item. Here is how common AI habits land on each side of it.
Risky on Etsy
- A gallery with no unedited photo of the real item
- AI retouching that hides a chip, a stain or a repair
- A generated glaze or color the real piece does not have
- A render of a piece you have not made yet
- An AI image in place of a finished pattern or recipe
Fine on Etsy
- One untouched photo first, styled scenes after it
- Scenes built from your real photo as the reference
- Scale shots checked against real measurements
- Your actual packaging in the gift photos
- AI-edited photos noted in the description
