How to write a prompt that works

Lead with the subject, then say where it is, what it is doing and how the picture should look. 'A red fox curled on a mossy log in morning fog, close-up, soft backlight, shallow depth of field' beats 'a beautiful fox picture', because every phrase gives the model something to draw.

Name the medium when it matters: film photo, oil painting, 3D render, pixel art, ink drawing. Name the light and the lens for photos. And when you need words in the image, put them in quotes and reach for GPT Image 2.5 Flare or Nano Banana 2.1, which render readable text.

  • Subject first, style last.
  • Match the aspect ratio to where the image is going: 16:9 for a screen, 9:16 for a story, 4:5 for a feed.
  • Change one thing between attempts so you can see what worked.
