The basics
Turn an image you like into a prompt you can use
Sometimes you only know what you want when you see it. Recreate is a library of reference images and a way to start from any of them. Press Recreate on an image, and it writes a prompt that describes the image in words and puts that prompt in the prompt bar, with the same aspect ratio.
From there, the image is yours to make. Generate the prompt as it is for a new picture in the same spirit, or change it first: swap the subject, move the scene, change the season, or keep the style and describe something new. The result is a new image made from words, not a copy of the reference.
Recreate is also a way to learn prompting. Reading the prompt for an image you like shows how its subject, setting, light, and style turn into words, which you can reuse in the AI image generator for your own ideas.
Tips and techniques
Finding a reference
Featured shows a mix of images to start with. Filter by a category such as People, Nature, or Cinematic to narrow it down, or search for a subject. Shuffle brings a new set when nothing fits. When one image is close, press Similar to see more like it, and keep going until you find the one.
Look for the quality you want to borrow: a lighting style, a color palette, a composition, or a mood. The subject matters less, since you can change it in the prompt.
- Filter by a category to narrow the grid.
- Press Similar on a near miss.
- Press Shuffle when nothing fits.
Tips and techniques
Editing the prompt
The prompt Recreate writes is plain language, so you can edit it like any other prompt. Keep the parts that describe what you liked about the image, often the light, the style, and the camera, and replace the rest. Change one thing at a time while you learn what each part does.
- Change the subject: replace the person or object and keep the rest.
- Change the place: keep the subject and style, and describe a new setting.
- Change the style: keep the scene and name a new medium, such as watercolor or film photo.
Tips and techniques
Making it your own
Your version can go further than the prompt. Add one of your saved characters by its @handle to put them in the scene. Bring the result to life as a short clip with the AI image to video generator, or change one part of it with Inpaint.
What you generate from Recreate lands with your creations and stays private to your account unless you post it.
Tips and techniques
Recreate or image to image?
Recreate works from words: it describes the reference and generates a new image from that description. That leaves room for a different composition and lets you change anything in the prompt. When the new image should follow the layout or pose of a specific picture closely, use image to image instead, which works from the picture itself.
The same prompt generated twice will not come out the same, and that is the point: each run is a new take. Generate a few and keep the one you like most.
Tips and techniques
Getting more out of a reference
A reference is a starting point, not a template. Before you generate, read the prompt and decide which parts you want to keep. A portrait might be worth keeping for its soft window light and shallow focus, a landscape for its colors at dusk, a poster for its bold composition. Keep those words, and change everything else freely.
Keep what works. When an edited prompt gives you a result you love, keep a copy of the prompt, and next time start from it instead of from the reference. Over time you build your own set of styles to reuse with any subject.
Browsing is worth it even when you are not looking for anything in particular. Shuffle and Similar are a quick way to find a direction for a project, a mood for a series, or an idea for your next post.
