AI eBay Listing Photos

eBay buyers judge an item by its photos, and for a used item those photos have to be the item itself. Here is where AI helps an eBay listing, where it puts the listing at risk, and how to keep every photo inside eBay's picture policy.

The basics

What eBay's picture policy requires

eBay keeps its picture rules short. Every listing needs at least one photo, and photos must be at least 500 pixels on the longest side. eBay recommends about 1,600 by 1,600 pixels, says 1:1 and 16:9 photos look best in listings and search, and lets you add up to 24 photos, each up to 12 MB, as JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC or AVIF. The first photo is the main photo, shown next to your title in search results.

The prohibitions matter more than the sizes. eBay does not allow photos that misrepresent the item, placeholder images, stock photos for used, damaged or defective items, added borders, added text, artwork or marketing material, or watermarks of any kind, including ownership marks. Breaking the policy can get a listing or photo removed, and eBay can also warn, restrict or suspend the account.

We last checked eBay's picture policy and its photo guide in October 2026; both are linked at the bottom of this page. eBay's own photo tools already swap backgrounds for white or for AI-generated scenes, so editing is not the problem. Accuracy is: a photo has to show the item, in the condition the buyer will receive it.

A little more possibility

Why eBay sellers edit listing photos on Mage

  • Backgrounds without touching the item

In Inpaint, tap Background and describe a white backdrop. Everything outside the mask, the item included, stays exactly as you shot it.

  • Clean white for new stock

Edit a phone photo of a new item onto a plain white backdrop, which eBay calls generally best for listings.

  • Lifestyle shots for new items

Show a new product in use from one photo, in the gallery slots after the main photo.

  • Zoom-ready new-item photos

Take a small photo of a new item past 1,600 pixels with the Image Enhancer.

  • Dark backdrops for shine

Jewelry and polished metal often read better on a darker background, and a prompt changes it in one pass.

  • Private by default

Your photos and edits stay in your account; nothing is posted anywhere you did not choose.

From idea to creation

How do you make eBay listing photos with AI?

It takes three steps, and it is free to start.

  1. Photograph the item itself

Shoot every side, the labels and model numbers, and any flaw, in daylight. These real photos are the listing.

  2. Clean the background only

Open Inpaint, tap Background, and describe a plain white or neutral backdrop. The item outside the mask does not change.

  3. Add scenes for new items

For new, unused stock, generate a lifestyle or in-use photo from your shot to fill the later gallery slots.

  4. Check against the item

Compare every edited photo with the real item, then upload. Condition photos go up exactly as shot.

Tips and techniques

New items and used items are two different jobs

A new, unused item in its original form looks like every other one of its kind, so a clean, generated scene around your photo of it misleads no one. Edit it onto white for the main photo, add a lifestyle shot and a scale shot, and you have a listing that looks like a store.

A used, refurbished, vintage or collectible item is one of a kind, and its photos are the condition report. eBay prohibits photos that do not show an item's actual condition, and it bans stock photos for used, damaged or defective items. An AI image of a used item, even one built from your own photo, is a new picture: the model redraws what it sees, and it can smooth a scratch, sharpen worn print, straighten a bent corner or change a serial number. A buyer who receives the real thing can fairly say it is not as pictured.

So for anything pre-owned, keep the item itself out of every model. Upscaling counts too: the Image Enhancer adds new fine detail as it enlarges, which is what you want for a new product and exactly what you do not want on a worn surface. Shoot condition photos at full resolution instead.

  • New and unused: edits and scenes are fine.
  • Used or vintage: only the background, and only with a mask.
  • Never regenerate or upscale a condition photo.
  • Photograph serial numbers and labels for real.

Tips and techniques

Clean backgrounds without misrepresenting the item

A masked edit is the honest way to clean a background. Open Inpaint, add your photo and tap Background, which selects everything behind the item in one tap. Describe what belongs there, such as "a plain white backdrop with a soft shadow under the item", and the model repaints only the masked area. The item, its scuffs and its exact colors stay as you shot them. Check the edges where the mask meets the item, and widen or erase the mask and run it again if a halo shows.

For a new item you can also do it as a prompt edit, with Mango 3 and the instruction to keep the item exactly as it is. The model rebuilds the scene and the item together, which gives cleaner edges around glass and hair-thin parts, at the cost of redrawing the item. The AI background changer page compares the two methods in more depth. eBay calls white backgrounds generally best and suggests a darker one for shiny items such as jewelry.

Tips and techniques

A photo set that sells on eBay

On eBay the photos that win are the ones that answer a buyer's questions before they ask. Use your 24 slots: the main photo of the whole item on a clean background, then every side, the top and the base, the label or model number, the inside or the box contents, and close-ups of every flaw. eBay's own advice is to show flaws up close and to add a coin or a ruler when size is not obvious.

For new stock, the later slots can sell the item: a photo of it in use, a scale shot in a hand or beside a familiar object, and a detail of the material. Make these from your own photo of the item, and keep them in the 1:1 or 16:9 frames eBay says look best.

  • Main photo: the whole item, clean background.
  • Every side, the base and the label.
  • Each flaw in its own close-up.
  • A coin or ruler for size.
  • Square or 16:9 frames.

Tips and techniques

Keep text, borders and watermarks off the photos

If you also sell on Amazon, do not reuse your Amazon infographics here. eBay does not allow added text, artwork or marketing material on photos, and it does not allow borders or watermarks of any kind. Put the features in the item specifics and the description, and keep every photo a photo. An Amazon gallery and an eBay gallery are different sets; the AI Amazon product images page covers the Amazon side.

The same goes for skills. In Claude, Codex or Cursor, Mage's Marketplace Listing Images skill lists eBay among its marketplaces, with eBay's own main-image rules. Use it for the photos of new stock and skip its text cards, which belong on Amazon, not eBay. The skills are free on the Mage skills page, and each image they make runs on Gems at the listed price.

Try these prompts

eBay photo prompts to start from

The first two run in Inpaint with Background selected; the rest are for new items only.

  • White backdrop, item untouched

A plain white backdrop with a soft, natural shadow under the item, even studio light.

  • Dark backdrop for a shiny item

A smooth charcoal grey backdrop with a faint gradient, soft light from above, a subtle reflection under the item.

  • New item in use

Keep the espresso machine exactly as in the reference. On a tidy kitchen counter with a cup under the spout, morning light from a window on the left, 35mm, square frame.

  • Scale shot for new stock

Keep the wireless earbuds case exactly as in the reference, same size and finish. Resting in an open palm against a plain light background, soft daylight, square frame.

Room to experiment

eBay's built-in photo tools vs Mage

eBay's listing tools already crop, adjust brightness and replace a background with white or an AI scene, and for a quick listing that is enough. Mage is for when you want more control over the result.

eBay's photo editor

  • A white background in one tap
  • A few preset AI backgrounds in the app
  • Crop, rotate, brightness and contrast
  • Built into the listing form

Mage

  • Any backdrop you can describe
  • A mask that leaves the item untouched
  • Relight and upscaling for new items
  • Several edit models to compare

Follow your imagination

Which eBay sellers use AI photos this way?

  • New-item resellers

Clean white main photos and in-use shots for stock you sell in quantity.

  • Home sellers clearing out

Replace a cluttered room behind each item with a plain backdrop, the item left exactly as it is.

  • Small brands on eBay

A consistent gallery for your own products, separate from your Amazon set.

  • Jewelry sellers

Dark, even backdrops for new pieces, so metal and stones read without glare.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AI photos on eBay?
Yes, as long as they accurately represent the item. eBay's own app offers AI backgrounds. For used, damaged or defective items, the photos have to show the actual item and its condition, so keep the item itself out of AI and edit only the background with a mask.
Can I use stock or AI-generated photos for a used item?
eBay bans stock photos for used, damaged or defective items, and a generated image of a used item cannot show its real condition. Use your own photos; at most, clean the background with a masked edit that leaves the item untouched.
What size should eBay photos be?
At least 500 pixels on the longest side, and eBay recommends about 1,600 by 1,600. Square 1:1 and 16:9 frames look best, and each file can be up to 12 MB.
How many photos can an eBay listing have?
Up to 24. At least one is required, and the first one is the main photo shown in search results.
Can I add text or a logo to eBay photos?
No. eBay does not allow added text, artwork, marketing material, borders or watermarks of any kind on listing photos. Put details in the item specifics and the description instead.
Should I upscale my eBay photos?
For new items, yes: the Image Enhancer takes a small photo past 1,600 pixels. For used items, no: upscaling adds new detail, so reshoot condition photos at full resolution instead.
