The basics
What is an AI virtual try-on?
A virtual try-on shows you wearing a piece of clothing you do not have on. You give it a photo of yourself and a photo of the garment, and the model dresses the person in the photo in that garment, following their pose and body and matching the light of the scene.
On Mage, virtual try-on runs on Outfit Swap. The first photo is you, or whoever is trying the look on with their permission. The second is the outfit: a product photo, a flat-lay, or a picture of someone else wearing it. Outfit Swap swaps clothing, footwear and accessories onto the subject and preserves the person and the scene, so the face you see is still yours.
It is a visual preview, and an honest one has limits. The model does not know your measurements or how the fabric stretches, so it shows you color, cut, proportion and style, not size or fit. For changing outfits on a photo for creative work rather than shopping, see the AI clothes changer.
A little more possibility
Why people try clothes on with Mage
Your own photo
Try a look on a photo of you, not on a stock model who looks nothing like you.
Any garment you can photograph
Use a product photo, a flat-lay or a shot of someone wearing it. No preset catalog to choose from.
You stay you
Outfit Swap preserves the person and the scene, so only the clothes change.
Whole looks, not just tops
Clothing, footwear and accessories all swap, and the prompt bar can combine several garment photos at once.
Private by default
Photos of you stay private to your account. Nothing is shared unless you post it.
See it from another side
Send the result to Angles for a new camera angle, or Relight to see it in evening light.
From idea to creation
How do you try on clothes virtually?
It takes three steps, and it is free to start.
Upload a photo of yourself
Open Outfit Swap and add a clear, well-lit photo of the person trying the look on.
Add the garment
Upload a photo of the piece: a product shot, a flat-lay, or someone wearing it.
Generate and compare
Run the swap, then run it again on another model if the drape or the detail is off. Save the looks you like.
Tips and techniques
Taking a try-on photo that works
The best try-on photo is a plain one. Stand facing the camera with your arms a little away from your body, in even light, against an uncluttered background. Wear something close-fitting, so the model can see your shape rather than guess at it under a bulky sweater. Show as much of your body as the garment covers: a full-length photo for a dress or trousers, waist up for a jacket.
The garment photo matters as much. A front-on product photo on a plain background is ideal, because the model can read the cut, the seams and the print. A photo of someone wearing it works too. Avoid photos where the piece is folded, partly hidden or shot at a steep angle.
- Face the camera, arms slightly away from the body
- Even light and a plain background
- Close-fitting clothes in your own photo
- Full length for dresses and trousers, waist up for tops
- A front-on garment photo on a plain background
Tips and techniques
Trying on shoes, accessories and layers
Outfit Swap handles footwear and accessories as well as clothing, so a pair of boots or a bag can go into the same swap as a coat. Outfit Swap takes one outfit photo at a time; to combine pieces from several photos in one go, use the prompt bar instead.
In the prompt bar, pick Mango 3 in the model menu, attach your photo and each garment photo, and describe the outfit by image: "Dress the person in image 1 in the coat from image 2 and the boots from image 3; keep her face, pose and background." Mango 3 accepts up to 10 images, and Nano Banana 2.1 up to 14.
Tips and techniques
What a virtual try-on can and cannot tell you
A try-on is good at the questions you ask in a mirror at first glance: does this color suit me, does this length work with my height, do these two pieces go together. It is not a fitting room. It cannot tell you whether the size will fit, how the fabric moves when you walk, or whether a seam will pull across your shoulders, so check the size chart before you buy.
If you are designing the garment rather than buying it, try-on is a fast way to judge a print or a silhouette on a real body before you cut fabric. For whole looks generated from a description, see the AI outfit generator.
