The basics

What is an AI photo editor?

An AI photo editor retouches a real photograph by understanding what is in it. Instead of brushing a fix by hand, layer by layer, you tell the editor what is wrong: the light is flat, her eyes are closed, the skin looks waxy, the picture is too small to print. The model repaints only what needs to change and leaves the rest of the photo alone.

Mage puts a set of focused photo tools in one place. Relight moves the light source and changes its direction, hardness, brightness and color. Refine fixes eyes and hands in one click, or follows your own instruction. Skin Enhancer restores natural skin texture. Inpaint repaints a region you paint over. Angles shows the same scene from a new camera position. Image Enhancer upscales the finished photo to 2K, 4K or 6K.

Each tool is a single-purpose app: upload a photo, pick a setting, generate. Because they all live in one account, you can pass a photo from one to the next without exporting and re-uploading, and every result stays private to you unless you choose to share it. For edits you describe in your own words across a whole image, see the AI image editor.

A little more possibility

Why photographers and creators edit photos on Mage

  • Light you can move

Relight picks a new light direction, soft or hard light, brightness and color, so a flat midday shot can become a warm side-lit portrait.

  • One-click fixes

Refine has Fix Eyes, Fix Hands and Add Detail presets, or takes your own instruction for the one thing that came out wrong.

  • Skin that looks like skin

Skin Enhancer offers Realistic, Soft, Imperfect and Imperfect with Freckles modes at three strengths, at 2K or 4K.

  • Repaint just one area

Inpaint changes only the region you paint over, so you can remove a stray object or replace a sign without touching the face.

  • A new camera angle

Angles regenerates the same scene from a new elevation and orientation, handy for product shots and portraits.

  • Finish at up to 6K

Image Enhancer upscales a JPEG or PNG of up to 30MB to 2K, 4K or 6K with added detail, ready for print.

From idea to creation

How do you edit a photo with AI?

It takes three steps, and it is free to start.

  1. Pick the tool for the problem

Relight for light, Refine for eyes and hands, Skin Enhancer for texture, Inpaint for one area, Angles for viewpoint.

  2. Upload the photo

Add the photo in your browser. Nothing to install, and the photo stays private to your account.

  3. Choose a setting and generate

Pick a light direction, a preset, a mode or a mask, then generate. Run it again or switch the model until it looks right.

  4. Upscale and download

Send the keeper to Image Enhancer for 2K, 4K or 6K, then download the original file, with no watermark.

Tips and techniques

Which tool fixes which problem

Most photo problems fall into a handful of kinds, and each has its own tool. Light that is flat, harsh or coming from the wrong side is a Relight job: you choose where the light comes from, whether it is soft or hard, how bright it is and what color it carries, and the people and the scene stay in place.

Detail problems are a Refine job. Closed or mismatched eyes, an extra finger or a mangled hand, and soft areas that need sharper detail each have a preset. When the problem is something in the picture rather than something about it, such as a passer-by, a bin or a crooked sign, paint over it in Inpaint and describe what belongs there instead. To swap the whole background, follow the AI background changer guide, and for a faded family print, the photo restoration guide.

  • Flat or harsh light: Relight, with soft light for faces and hard light for drama
  • Closed eyes or bad hands: Refine with the Fix Eyes or Fix Hands preset
  • Plastic-looking skin: Skin Enhancer in Realistic or Imperfect mode
  • Something that should not be there: Inpaint, with a mask and a short prompt
  • Wrong viewpoint: Angles, with a new elevation and orientation
  • Too small to print: Image Enhancer, last

Tips and techniques

A retouching order that keeps quality high

Fix what is in the picture before you fix how it looks. Remove objects and repair eyes and hands first, because those edits repaint pixels, and anything you do afterwards builds on them. Change the light next, so the new lighting falls across the corrected picture. Treat skin after the light is settled, since lighting changes how texture reads.

Upscale last. Image Enhancer adds detail as it enlarges, so running it before other edits means each later edit works on a bigger file and can smooth away the detail you paid for. Finish at the size you need: 2K for the web and social, 4K or 6K for print and large displays.

Tips and techniques

Keeping a real photo looking real

The fastest way to make a photo look edited is to change too much at once. Make one change per pass and compare it with the original. On Skin Enhancer, start at Low strength and move up only if the texture still looks smoothed. On Refine, a short, specific instruction ("open his eyes naturally") beats a long list.

The model matters too. The editing apps start on Mango 3 Turbo, which is quick and good for most fixes. For portraits where skin, fabric and hair texture must hold up close, switch to Guava 2 Pro, which is built for photoreal work. If a result drifts, run the same edit on another model and keep the better one.

  • One change per pass, then compare with the original
  • Start Skin Enhancer at Low strength
  • Keep Refine instructions short and specific
  • Use Guava 2 Pro when texture must survive a close look

The right model for the job

The best models for photo editing

Relight, Refine, Inpaint and Angles let you pick the model that does the edit. These are the ones to reach for.

  • Mango 3 Turbo

The editing apps start here. Fast and inexpensive, it handles most everyday fixes, so it is the one to iterate with.

  • Mango 3

Mage's flagship for edits that must keep the rest of the image exactly in place, and for following precise instructions. It stops at 2K.

  • Guava 2 Pro

Built for photorealism: close-up skin, fabric and hair texture. Name the lighting in your instruction for the best result.

  • Nano Banana 2.1

Google's model for edits from up to 14 reference images and output up to 4K. Google's safety filter applies.

Try these prompts

Instructions that work in Refine and Inpaint

Short, specific, and clear about what must stay the same.

  • Open closed eyes

Open her eyes naturally, looking at the camera, keep everything else the same

  • Remove a passer-by

Empty cobblestone street continuing behind him, same evening light

  • Fix a hand

A relaxed hand with five fingers resting on the table

  • Add detail to soft fabric

Crisp wool texture on the coat, sharp stitching, same color

Room to experiment

Manual retouching vs an AI photo editor

Manual retouching gives you total control and asks for hours and skill in return. An AI photo editor trades the brushwork for a description of the fix, and puts light, detail, texture and size in one place.

Manual retouching

  • Every fix brushed by hand, layer by layer
  • New light means a reshoot or hours of dodging and burning
  • Upscaling is a separate tool or plugin
  • A long learning curve before the first good result

Mage

  • Describe the fix or pick a preset
  • Relight with direction, hardness, brightness and color
  • Upscale to 6K in the same account
  • Private by default, nothing to install

Follow your imagination

What can you do with an AI photo editor?

  • Portraits and profile photos

Fix a blink, soften harsh light and restore skin texture on the one shot where the expression was right.

  • Product and listing photos

Relight a product, see it from another angle, remove clutter from the table and upscale for a sharp listing.

  • Travel photos

Take a stranger out of the frame and give a grey afternoon the warm light it deserved.

  • Creator content

Polish a thumbnail or a feed post in minutes, then reuse the look on the next one.

Start small. Dream big.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI photo editor?
Look for one that fixes the problem you actually have without making the photo look edited. Mage gives you separate tools for light, eyes and hands, skin texture, single areas, camera angle and resolution, free to start with a one-time 300-Gem bonus and no watermark. Unlimited editing on the Mango models starts on Pro.
Can AI fix closed eyes or a bad hand in a photo?
Yes. Refine has Fix Eyes and Fix Hands presets, and an Add Detail preset for soft areas. Upload the photo, pick the preset and generate. If the preset is not quite right, write your own short instruction instead.
Will the person still look like themselves?
The editing tools change what you ask for and keep the rest in place. For portraits, keep each edit small, start Skin Enhancer at Low strength, and use Guava 2 Pro when skin and hair texture must hold up close.
How large can I export an edited photo?
Image Enhancer upscales to 2K, 4K or 6K from a JPEG or PNG of up to 30MB. All three sizes can be run with Gems; unlimited enhancing reaches 2K on Pro, 4K on Pro Plus and 6K on Max.
Can I change the lighting of a photo after it was taken?
Yes, that is what Relight does. Choose the direction the light comes from, soft or hard light, its brightness and its color, and the scene is relit while the people and objects stay where they are.
Do I need to install anything, and are my photos private?
No install: every tool runs in your browser, and you sign in when you are ready to generate. Your uploads and results are private by default, and nothing is posted anywhere unless you choose to share it.
What is not allowed?
Nothing illegal is allowed, including any content involving minors and any non-consensual imagery of real people. Inpaint asks you to confirm you have permission to use the content, including any likeness it contains, before it generates.
