AI Shopify Product Images

On Shopify, nobody rejects your images but your own theme. Decide on one look, the same light, ratio and background on every product, and fill your store with it from the product photos you already have.

The basics

What Shopify asks of your product images

Shopify has no marketplace rulebook for images: no required white background, no text rule, no review queue. The limits are technical and generous. Product images can be up to 5000 by 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, files must be smaller than 20 MB, and PNG and then JPEG are the best types for most products, with TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP also accepted. For square images, Shopify says 2048 by 2048 pixels usually displays best. Product videos can run up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, at up to 4K.

The rule that matters is the one you set yourself. Shopify's help tells you to use a consistent aspect ratio for all your images so collection pages line up, and a grid of mismatched images is the first thing a shopper notices. A store where every product shares one light, one background and one frame reads as a brand. A store assembled from supplier photos, each lit and cropped differently, reads as a reseller, whatever the products are.

One outside rulebook still reaches your store: if you list products on Google Shopping, Google's Merchant Center rules apply to those same images. We last checked Shopify's and Google's help pages in October 2026; both are linked at the bottom of this page.

A little more possibility

Why Shopify stores make their images on Mage

  • One house style

Write the light, backdrop and frame once and paste it into every prompt, so a new product matches the old ones.

  • An approved shot as the reference

Mango 3 takes up to 10 references, so your product and a shot you already approved go into the same image.

  • Pull outliers into line

Relight moves the light direction and color of an odd shot until it sits with the rest of the collection.

  • Banners with a headline

GPT Image 2.5 Flare renders readable text for homepage heroes and collection banners in wide frames.

  • The same model everywhere

Save a model once as a character and write their @handle into any prompt, across every product page.

  • Sized for Shopify

Square images at 2K, and the Image Enhancer at 4K for zoom, still inside the 5000-pixel limit.

From idea to creation

How do you make Shopify product images with AI?

It takes three steps, and it is free to start.

  1. Set the house style

Choose one ratio, one backdrop and one light direction, and write them as a single line you will reuse in every prompt.

  2. Attach the product and a reference shot

In Mango 3, attach your product photo and one image in the style you approved, then paste the style line.

  3. Make the full product set

Generate the featured image, gallery angles, a lifestyle scene and one image for each variant.

  4. Upscale and upload

Take the keepers to 4K with the Image Enhancer, check them against the product, and upload in the same order on every product.

Tips and techniques

Design the look before you generate

Consistency is a set of decisions you make once. Pick the frame: 1:1 for most products, or 4:5 if your theme shows tall cards. Pick the backdrop: white, a warm grey paper, or one brand color. Pick the light: for example a large soft light from the upper left with a soft shadow falling right. Pick the camera height and the margin around the product. Then write it as one line, such as "warm grey paper backdrop, soft light from the upper left, soft shadow to the right, camera at product height, product centered with even margins, square frame", and put it at the end of every product prompt.

A written style line gets you close; a reference image gets you the rest of the way. Mango 3 takes up to 10 reference images, so attach the new product next to a shot from your store that you already like, and say "match the light, backdrop and framing of the second image." Each new product then lands in the same visual world as the last one.

When one image still looks out of place, fix the light rather than regenerating everything. Relight lets you aim the light from a new direction in 45-degree steps, choose soft or hard light, and set its brightness and color, while the product and the composition stay as they are.

  • One ratio for every product image.
  • One backdrop color and material.
  • One light direction and shadow side.
  • The same margin around every product.
  • An approved shot attached as a style reference.

Tips and techniques

The images a Shopify product page needs

The featured image is the one the collection grid shows, so it carries the house style most strictly: the product alone, centered, in the store frame. The gallery behind it shows the angles, a close-up of the material, the product in use and the product at scale. Add one lifestyle image per product with your saved character or in a real-looking room, so a shopper can picture owning it.

Variants need their own care. Shopify lets you assign one image to each variant, and that image becomes the preview when a shopper picks the color or size. Group each variant's other photos together in the gallery so a shopper who picks "olive" sees olive from every side.

Then there is the rest of the store: a homepage hero in 16:9 or 21:9 with space for a headline, collection banners, and short product clips, since Shopify product pages take video too. The AI product video generator covers clips, and in Claude, Codex or Cursor the Product Photoshoot skill on the Mage skills page shoots one product in modes that include a hero banner, a lifestyle scene and a social carousel.

Tips and techniques

Colorways and variants: where AI goes wrong

The fastest AI workflow is also the riskiest one for a store: photograph one color and ask the model to recolor it for the others. A generated "olive" is a guess, and a shopper who receives a different olive returns it. Photograph every variant once, even on a phone, and use those photos as the references for its scenes. The scenes can be generated; the color should come from the real product.

The same goes for anything a shopper will read. The model redraws the product each time, so a printed pattern, a small logo or the text on a label can change between images. Check every variant image against the real item, and keep a real photo for any detail a customer needs to read before buying.

Tips and techniques

When your images leave Shopify

Google's Merchant Center has its own image rules for products listed on Google Shopping: at least 500 by 500 pixels and around 1,500 by 1,500 or larger for best results, the product filling no less than 75% and no more than 90% of the image, and no promotional overlays, borders or watermarks. Google also requires that images made with generative AI carry metadata saying so, the IPTC DigitalSourceType tag trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and asks merchants not to strip it. Keep your featured images clean, put sale messages in banners rather than on product photos, and check that any generated image you submit still carries that tag.

Mind the ceiling as well as the floor. The Image Enhancer upscales to 2K, 4K or 6K. For Shopify, choose 4K: a 6K image is larger than the 5000-pixel limit, and an oversized file only slows your page down. Upscale last, after every other edit.

  • Featured image: product only, no sale text.
  • Product fills 75% to 90% for Google Shopping.
  • Keep the AI metadata on generated images you submit to Google.
  • 4K, not 6K, for Shopify uploads.
  • Files under 20 MB.

Shopify image prompts to start from

Attach your product photo, and for catalog shots a second image in your approved style.

  • House-style product shot

Keep the sneaker exactly as in the first reference. Match the light, backdrop and framing of the second image: warm grey paper backdrop, soft light from the upper left, soft shadow to the right, camera at product height, centered with even margins, square frame.

  • Variant lifestyle scene

Keep the olive linen shirt exactly as in the reference, same color, buttons and stitching. Folded on a wooden bench in a sunlit hallway, a straw hat beside it, morning light, 50mm, square frame.

  • Homepage hero banner

Keep the three ceramic planters exactly as in the reference. On a long concrete ledge with trailing plants, late afternoon sun, wide 21:9 frame, the planters on the right third, calm empty wall on the left for a headline.

  • Collection banner with text

A wide 16:9 banner: the skincare bottles from the reference on wet river stones, soft overcast light. The headline "The Morning Edit" in large serif type on the left, nothing else.

  • Your model, every product

@yourcharacter wearing the denim jacket from the reference, walking past a brick wall on a bright autumn morning, 85mm, 4:5 frame, the jacket sharp and true to color.

Room to experiment

Supplier photos vs a Mage house style

Supplier photos are free and fast, and they are also what every other store selling the same product uses. A house style built on Mage costs an afternoon and gives your store a look that is yours.

Supplier photos

  • Lit, cropped and colored differently per product
  • The same images as every other store
  • Mixed ratios that break the collection grid
  • No lifestyle shots for most products

Mage house style

  • One light, backdrop and frame on every product
  • Scenes no other store has
  • Every image in the ratio your theme expects
  • Lifestyle and variant shots from one photo each

Follow your imagination

Frequently asked questions

What size should Shopify product images be?
For square images, Shopify says 2048 by 2048 pixels usually displays best. Images can be up to 5000 by 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and files must be smaller than 20 MB.
Does Shopify require a white background?
No. Shopify has no background rule, so choose the backdrop that fits your brand and use it on every product. If you list on Google Shopping, keep product images free of promotional overlays, borders and watermarks.
Which aspect ratio should I use on Shopify?
One ratio for every product, so collection pages line up. Square 1:1 is the safe default and 4:5 suits themes with tall product cards; Mage generates both.
Should I upscale to 6K for Shopify?
No. Shopify accepts images up to 5000 pixels on a side, and a 6K image is larger than that. Choose 4K in the Image Enhancer.
Can I use AI images for Google Shopping?
Yes, but Google requires images made with generative AI to carry metadata that says so, the IPTC tag trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and asks you not to strip it. Product images also cannot carry promotional overlays.
How do I keep the same model across my store?
Save the model once as a character and write their @handle in every prompt. The AI character generator page explains how characters work.
Can I generate a different color of my product?
You can, but the color is a guess. Photograph each variant once and use that photo as the reference, so the color a shopper sees is the color that ships.
